Technical Tips: Basic Rules for Adagio on Vista

VISTA's acceptable security policy is that all programs should be run with User Account Control (UAC) turned ON. As well, while a user can be an Administrator, the preferred account type is as a Standard User, in which case when programs are installed, VISTA's UAC function will prompt for an Administrative account and password. All VISTA-compatible Adagio programs are meant to run using this scheme, but installing them requires the following considerations:

1. Only 8.1 or later Adagio programs will be supported when installing using a Vista machine (excluding Crystal Reports, which will be done later).

2. To install or upgrade an Adagio program locally onto a VISTA machine, you must be logged on as the user who will be using the program, and should abide by the above policy.

3. To install or upgrade an Adagio program to a network using a VISTA machine, you must be logged on as the user who will be using the program(s) on that workstation. If that user is not an Administrator, then the user must first temporarily become a VISTA Administrative User. The user must then temporarily have UAC turned OFF. When all programs have been installed, the user should turn UAC back ON and then should become a Standard User, if required.

Once the Adagio program on the network has been installed or upgraded, then each workstation must be updated. On each workstation, you must be logged on as the user who will use the program, and should abide by the above policy. You can start the Adagio program, which will automatically run a workstation install if one is required, or run either the wksetup.exe program or the allwkst.exe program to update the individual workstation(s). As well, see Note below.

4. If, on a VISTA machine, there will be two or more Windows users who will run an Adagio program (whether locally or from a network), these other users can remain as VISTA Standard Users and with UAC turned ON, and then, as usual, you should run wksetup.exe (or allwkst.exe if for a network). As well, see Note below.

Note 1: While in general the auto-workstation feature will work, if you find that it briefly flashes a screen and then exits, you must run wksetup.exe."

Note 2: Due to VISTA's more deliberate security scheme, Microsoft realized that the installation of some programs may no longer work properly. They created detection techniques to determine if that might be the case, and if so, their "Program Compatibility Assistant' issues a warning at the end of execution, indicating that the program may not have installed properly. You can say "Re-install using recommended Settings", "This program installed correctly", or you may Cancel the query.

The Adagio installs have many built-in checks. So unless during the install there is an explicit error message during the install, you should always say "This program has installed correctly". We have simply found that VISTA's detection techniques are not sufficiently robust for many Adagio install scenarios.

Note 3 : If you have a non-Vista workstation, you can avoid having to turn off User Account Control to install to a netwwork drive and posssible messages from the the Program Compatibiliy Assistant by installing the actual Adagio programs or upgrades from that station.
