Windows 98
Windows 98 CompatibilityWindows 98 is not a supported platform for Adagio and the installation of any module or service pack dated after July 2008 will make all Adagio modules inaccessible on any machine running Windows 98. The changes we made to improve the performance of Adagio preclude supporting this 10-year old environment.
From July 1, 2008, Adagio will not run on Windows 98.
Note: that where compatibility of earlier versions with Windows 98 is indicated, compatibility with Windows 98 SE (Second Edition) is implied.
Windows 2000
(last updated: Jul 29, 2011)
Windows 2000 CompatibilityThe Windows 2000 workstation will no longer be a supported platform for Adagio in future releases (any release after January 1, 2009). This means that no quality assurance is performed in this environment, and our ability to isolate issues that might surface is limited. We will attempt to address problems that may be encountered, but no guarantee of ongoing support is given.
We will not delay moving to newer versions of the development tools or components used to create Adagio in order to maintain compatibility with Windows 2000 at the expense of improvements to the product.
Adagio GridView 9.0A or higher will not run on a Windows 2000 workstation. The Financial Reporter in Adagio Ledger 9.0B or higher will not run on Windows 2000. The Financial Reporter in Adagio FX 8.1C or higher will not run on Windows 2000. Therefore we have removed compatibility with 2000 from our compatibility chart for these modules.
There are no known compatibility issues running other Adagio modules or earlier versions of GridView or the Financial Reporter on Windows 2000 at this time.
Windows Server 2000 remains a supported platform until July 13, 2010, although running Adagio programs from the server console or from a Remote Desktop Connection (RDC) to the server is no longer supported. GridView 9.0A or higher, the Financial Reporter in Adagio Ledger 9.0B or higher and in Adagio FX 8.1C or higher will not run from the Server console or an RDC to the server. All Adagio products can be run on Windows XP, Vista or 7 stations connected to Server 2000 on a LAN.
Support from Microsoft(r) for Windows Server 2000 ends July 13, 2010 and it will no longer be a supported platform for Adagio after this date.
Update on Windows 2000 Compatibility, July 19, 2011
It has been reported by clients that Adagio does not run after installing modules dated June 2011 or later. Softrak will not be able to confirm this or make changes to attempt to maintain compatibility.
Windows XP
(last updated: Nov 14, 2011)
Windows XP CompatibilityWindows XP requires SP3.
Support from Microsoft(r) for Windows XP will end April 2014. Adagio is fully supported on XP until then.
Support from Microsoft for Windows XP with Service Pack 2 (SP2) ended July 13, 2010 and is no longer a supported platform for Adagio.
There were no known problems running Adagio on XP SP2. However, no quality assurance will be performed and no support is offered in this environment.
Earlier releases should not be used.
Windows Vista
(last updated: Aug 9, 2011)
Windows Vista requires SP2. Support from Microsoft(r) for Windows Vista with Service Pack 1 (SP1) ended July 12, 2011 and is no longer a supported platform for Adagio.
Windows Vista Compatibility Adagio Accounting version 8.1A and higher are compatible with Windows Vista.
Versions 8.1A and higher of Adagio Accounting modules are compatible with Windows Vista. Refer to the
Compatibility Chart for the most current Product Compatibility Info.
Adagio 8.1A versions remain compatible with earlier versions of Windows except as noted in the Win 98 compatibility statement.
Versions prior to 8.1AAdagio accounting modules with version numbers less than 8.1A will not install or run under Vista in its default configuration, and Softrak does not provide support for those releases under Vista.
While it is possible to install earlier versions of the Adagio modules under Vista by completely disabling User Account Control, once the modules have been installed, the following known issues (amongst others) will be encountered:
- Faxing of documents will not work.
- F1 Help will be unavailable.
We will not be conducting further testing of earlier versions of the Adagio modules under Vista.
Windows 7
(last updated: Feb 25, 2011)
Windows 7 CompatibilityAdagio versions 8.1A and higher are compatible with Windows 7 (including SP1), with the following exceptions and limitations.
Adagio 8.1A and higher versions are compatible with earlier versions of Windows except as noted in the Windows 98 compatibility statement and the Windows 2000 compatibility statement.
Crystal Reports for Adagio 8.5B (2010.05.30) or higher is required for compatibility with Windows 7 (and Vista). Crystal Reports for Adagio 8.5 (no letter after 8.5) is not compatible with Windows 7 (or Vista) and custom reports added to the Reports menu of Adagio modules (CustomRP) and standard reports that have been modified (ModRP) for use on Windows XP stations will cause problems in those modules Windows 7 (and Vista) stations. Security Groups can be defined in Adagio to prevent this problem.
GridView Server 9.0A is required for compatibility with Windows 7 (and Vista). GridView Server 8.1A is not compatible with Windows 7 (or Vista).
Adagio ODBC 9.0A is compatible with Windows 7 (and Vista). If you start the ODBC Data Source Administrator by running Adagio ODBC from the Windows start menu you must Run As Administrator.
Adagio OLEDB (any version) is not compatible with Windows 7 and there will not be a compatibility release due to an architectural change required by Microsoft and the availability of Adagio ODBC.
The Adagio Data Source (ADS) used by all Adagio modules must be version 1.12.54.2623 or higher. Check the 'Database source' in the Help | About of any Adagio module. If it is not 1.12.54.2623 or higher you must install the System Updater 2010.01.05 or higher (scroll to bottom). If you ran Adagio on Windows 7 with an earlier version of ADS you may need to adjust permissions on Adagio data files as described in the System Updater release note. Installing any Adagio module with a release date in 2010 will install a compatible version of ADS.
Where Vista is stated in documentation and on install screens it can be assumed to apply to Windows 7 also. Future releases will reference Windows 7 where applicable.
Specification designers cannot open a spec file (ex. invoice, statement, check) on a UNC path. Although UNC paths are rarely used when opening Adagio databases, any install or workstation install on a new machine (meaning it never had any Adagio install previously, for any user), adds a Windows Start item for the Adagio sample data that will use a UNC path. The problem will be encountered if the designer is opened on the sample data when started from Windows Start. There is no problem when starting Adagio using any other means. This has been addressed in the designer for Payables 8.1B and Checks 8.1B, and any module with a release date in 2010 or higher.
Adagio has not been tested in a peer-to-peer environment on Windows 7. Although we believe there should be no problems running Adagio in this configuration compatibility is not assured at this time. The SetServerForAdagio.exe utility should be run on the machine(s) where the Adagio data and programs are located. This utility is installed to the \softrak\system folder by any Adagio module with a release date in 2010 and by the System Updater utility. In general, Softrak recommends peer-to-peer environments for only the smallest and simplest networks.
Versions prior to 8.1AAdagio accounting modules with version numbers less than 8.1A are not compatible with Windows 7, and Softrak does not provide support for those releases under Windows 7.
Windows 8
(last updated: Apr 16, 2012)
Windows 8 CompatibilitySoftrak is committed to fully supporting Adagio running on Windows 8 in a timely manner. Initial testing indicates current versions of Adagio install and function without problem on Windows 8. More detailed compatibility information will be provided as soon as it is available.
Windows 2003 Server
(last updated: Nov 14, 2011)
Windows Server 2003 CompatibilityAdagio is compatible with Microsoft Server 2003 (x86 and x64).
Windows 2008 Server
(last updated: Apr 11, 2012)
Windows Server 2008 CompatibilityAdagio is compatible with Microsoft Server 2008 and Server 2008 R2 (x86 and x64).
If Vista stations are used, they must have Vista SP1 or higher installed. Adagio modules must be version 8.1A or higher to run on Vista. See Vista compatibility.
If Windows 7 stations are used, Adagio modules must be version 8.1A or higher. See Windows 7 compatibility.
Earlier versions of Adagio can be run on workstations on with XP stations. However, Adagio version 8.1A or higher is recommended for use with Server 2008. No quality assurance is performed on earlier versions in this environment, and our ability to support it or isolate issues that might surface is limited. Problems that may be identified in earlier versions will not be corrected. Service Packs for earlier versions of Adagio will not be released. Adagio versions earlier than 8.1A cannot be run from the server console or from a Remote Desktop Connection (RDC) to the server.
Windows Server 2008
A setting must be made on the server for Adagio compatibility. The Server Message Block (SMB) protocol must be set to SMB1.
The SetServerForAdagio utility is provided to check and adjust the setting. The utility is installed to the \softrak\system folder by Adagio modules with a release date in 2010 or higher. It can also be downloaded here
SetServerForAdagio . It must be run from the \softrak\system folder and it must be run at the server (not from a station). A server restart is required if the setting is changed. For documentation on SetServerForAdagio see 'Installing on a network' in the Readme help in more recent releases of any Adagio module.
Windows Server 2008 R2
For Server 2008 R2 set to SMB2 (this is the default and unless you have changed it previously it does not need to be set).
Windows Small Business Server 2011
(last updated: Dec 3, 2011)
Windows Small Business Server 2011 CompatibilityAdagio is compatible with Microsoft SBS 2011 and SBS 2003. For SBS 2011 set to SMB2 (this is the default and unless you have changed it previously it does not need to be set.
Microsoft SQL Server
(last updated: Dec 12, 2011)
Microsoft SQL Server CompatibilityAdagio does not use an external (3rd party) database manager such as Microsoft SQL or Oracle to store its data. However, 25 years of experience has shown that Adagio's internal database is robust, fast and scalable. Adagio's internal database offers the following benefits:
- No requirement for external expertise for setup or configuration
- No need for additional licenses
- No need for additional hardware over the requirements of the application
- No security issues since only those people explicitly given access tools can look at the data
If an organization has an IT department and a corporate standard for data storage, then the use of a private database may be an issue, but the typical Adagio client outsources their IT support and is more interested in available tools for data access. Users can access their accounting data using:
- Adagio ODBC for read-only or read-write access to the data using industry standard tools (including SQL Server and MS Query)
- Crystal Reports for Adagio to provide complex management reports with a high-performance, read-only engine
- Adagio GridView for simplified ad-hoc inquiries where the numbers are more important than the presentation of the data
- Adagio FX for financial statement style reporting off the general ledger figures
- Import/Export templates to easily move masses of data into and out of the accounting database on a one time or repetitive basis
Asking "what database technology are you using" is the same as asking "what programming language is it written in". The answer is only significant if you are planning on modifying the code or writing directly to the database, a task that we would actively discourage even if Softrak did make the source code available. (We do make the database schema available.)
Issues about database use are indirectly related to database size and/or transaction processing speed. While most of our clients are small, with a single accounting department staff member, we do have clients who use Adagio to:
- Manage over 700,000 inventory items
- Track over 100,000 customers
- Process over 25,000 invoices per month
- Manage more than 85,000 general ledger accounts
- Manage more than 450 departments
- Pay over 200,000 checks per year
- Post batches for over $1 billion
Remember, SQL only defines an "Access language" (Structured Query Language), it does not speak to how the data is stored on disk. QuickBooks uses an SQL database to store its data, but only permits access to the data using its SDK or an ODBC link with a restricted view of the fields in the database (defined by the SDK). Direct access to the data in the database is not permitted.
Adagio uses a B* Tree indexed method with significant data redundancy to protect against hardware failure. By installing Adagio ODBC and linking the Adagio data to MS SQL Server, technical staff can easily structure queries against the database for company reporting.
